Scott Smith is one of the owners and helps oversee operations.  He earned a BS from Texas A&M in Aquaculture in 1989 and an MS in Fisheries Science at Auburn University in 1995.  Mr. Smith has been a co-owner, co-founder of Aquatic Features, Inc., Johnson Lake Management's parent company, since 2000.  Prior to Aquatic Features Inc., Mr. Smith worked as a researcher at The El Carao Fisheries Research Station in Comayagua, Honduras, the Production Manager of Simaron Freshwater Fish in Hempstead, Texas, and the General Manager of Anguilla Eel Farm in Petersburg, Virginia.

Gilbert Salazar, an aquatic technician, has been with Johnson Lake Management since 2010.

The koi ponds & water gardens we at, Philadelphia Waterscapes, in Villanova, Pennsylvania (PA), construct for our clients rely on a  naturally balanced ecosystem to stay clean and clear without the use of such unnatural ‘cures’ as pond chemicals and UV radiation sterilizers. Simply, the beneficial bacteria that colonize the filters, rocks, and gravel of the pond break down fish waste and other organic materials and turn the harmful ammonia into ammonium nitrate, which is plant fertilizer.

The aquatic plants, installed directly into the gravel substrate take in these free-floating nutrients, helping to starve algae, which wants the same nutrients, out of the system. The fish will then graze the thin layer of algae that do try to grow on the rocks as well as any other organic material that may find its way into the pond. Once the ecosystem is established and balanced, you don’t need to feed the fish or fertilize the plants. The system is nearly self-maintaining.

Without a biological filter, the ammonia levels in the water would continue to grow due to decaying organic material and fish waste, making the water inhospitable to fish and/or life, and leaving you a maintenance nightmare to deal with on a daily basis.
